To my knowledge, this is a first.

Dec 21 at around 9am a single-engine Cessna 208 (Caravan) flying as a UPS contract carrier, collided with a powered paraglider, killing both pilots.

According to this source the aircraft was enroute from Houston’s KIAH bound for KACT (Victoria Regional) at about 4800 feet. The collision separated one wing of the caravan. It was a violent, unrevivable piece of horrible luck. Our condolences to loved ones left behind.

ADSB-out is a transmitter that would have alerted the Cessna 208 to the presence of another aircraft but ADSB-out is not widely available to ultralight pilots.

I (Jeff Goin) hope to be part of a pilot program with UAvionix to remedy that situation.
